Resume writing tips and myths

from:

While there are many misconceptions about writing resumes, a few stick out as ones that can seriously hurt your chances of getting that phone call for an interview. A resume is a tool, but only if you know how to use it.

Resumes aren’t important

Of course, you could just say that it’s all about luck and networking that gets you the job that you want. And for some people, this is true. But for the rest of us, it’s the resume and our abilities that get us in the door and into the next job.

Employers are looking to see what you are capable of based upon your experience, education, and training. A resume can give them all of this information in a concise manner. Resumes are very important.

Nearly every job requires a resume of some sort in the hiring process. You may even need to post this resume for customers and other employees to see. Your resume is a reflection of you before you even step inside the door or punch a time clock.

A resume is your history

A resume was once thought of as just a way to tell the hiring manager where you’ve been. However, the latest resume writing tips show us the fact that they should be showing the manager where you want to go.

It all starts off with a career objective that focused your writing into what the reader wants to hear first. It shows how the experiences and training are related to the future that you want for yourself. This isn’t about that job you had in high school; it’s about what that job taught you and how that past can help you today.

A good resume writing tips is to think of your resume as a sort of proposal for the prospective employer. Talk to them about all of the qualities that make you a good employee and why they should hire you. You’ll find that when you take this approach, rather than just regurgitating the facts of your life, you will create an interesting and intriguing resume.

A resume never changes

This is the most often mentioned myth in resume writing. One of the best resume writing tips is that it does!

You are not the same person that you were in prior jobs. You’ve had a lot of experience since then that can help you in the future. But the reader is never going to know that if you never update your resume.

Even if you’re not actively searching for a job, you want to look over your resume to make sure that it still true and accurate. Check out a range of resume writing tips to help you. First of all, your memory isn’t as great when you’re in a rush to send out a resume, and two, you might need your resume for your current job, so why spend the extra time updating it, if you can do it on a regular basis?

Another thing to consider is that trends change. What your market needed when you started and what it expects now is not the same, nor should you expect it to be.

You need to show that you are up to date on the latest industry trends and resume styles so that if you end up having to find another job, you fit right in with everyone else.

These myths can bury anyone’s resume, no matter what school you’ve gone to or what background you have. Treat your resume like a part of you, shape it constantly, evaluate it, and respect it. That same respect will be realized by the person that reads it.

And resume writing tips are what gets your resume into the interview room.
